OUR WORK IN MONTANA

Healing Garden and Art Program
Immigrant Legal Fund

WHAT WE LEARNED

South North Nexus is dedicated to supporting newly arrived families in Montana. Through partnerships and three comprehensive studies, we have explored the challenges these families face and their significant contributions to our communities. Stakeholder conversations highlighted barriers such as documentation, housing, healthcare, and equitable employment. The lack of proper documentation creates complex economic, health, and social challenges, making it difficult for immigrants to integrate into their new communities. Commonly identified challenges include language barriers, fear, and stress.

Our work has demonstrated the critical role immigrant workers play in Montana’s economy while underscoring the difficulties they face in community participation. Simple measures, such as obtaining a driver’s license or applying for housing, remain out of reach for many families, making it challenging for them to access stable employment, secure safe housing, or fully participate in everyday life.

Our Solutions

Healing Garden and Art Program
SNN's Healing Garden and Art Program at the Story Mill Garden and Food Forest in Bozeman, Montana, provides a nurturing space for immigrant children and their families. Created with the support of many individuals, the program helps reduce stress while fostering self-expression through art and gardening. Children actively connect with nature by planting, watering, harvesting, and enjoying the food they grow.

Immigrant Legal Fund
The Immigrant Legal Fund provides essential legal support to immigrants and their families, assisting them in navigating residency processes in Montana. With the help of dedicated lawyers and generous donors, we have supported 30 people in beginning their immigration journeys, reducing stress, and reuniting families.

Economic Labor Studies
SNN collaborated with the Northern Rocky Mountain Economic Development District and Circle Analytics to analyze the economic contributions of immigrants in Montana. By engaging with business owners, farmers, ranchers, and service industry representatives, the study highlighted the vital role immigrants play in supporting local industries and fostering economic growth across the state.
